Seventymm

Ah, we all know what 70 mm means. But Seventymm? Well, the phrase, or word if you please, is a trademark of Mumbai-based Seventymm Services Private Limited. About that later.

The phrase ‘70 mm’ makes one pretty nostalgic. In my student days I recall not missing a single ‘70 mm’ film whenever one debuted in prestigious halls like the Globe theater. And if it had ‘stereophonic sound’ as well going with it, I would take that as the ultimate stamp of quality of the film.

Today film seeing has undergone a tectonic change from what it used to be even a few years back. Skimpily dressed lasses and pelvis gyrating dances are so common that they stare at you all the time from newspapers, billboards and of course the small screen. The big change though is the number of multi-screen ’plexes that have come up everywhere.

Enjoying films is like a family outing reserved for weekends, and since the multiplexes are nearly always located in large shopping malls, the fun spills over to shopping and eating as well.

And now further transformation is in store. Which is by way of enjoying films at home. Seventymm is perhaps the first organized pan-India movie rental service to offer something about 15,000 titles spanning across not only Hindi and English but also several regional languages including Bengali.

You’d wonder it’s nothing new. After all there are CD/DVD shops in every para worth its salt. But then these shops just don’t have those many titles, and often the quality of their product and service is utterly poor. It’s not uncommon to hear complaints that DVD players have gone kaput because of low-quality discs.

Any choice? Enter organized service providers like Seventymm.

Seventymm is modeled after such US dotcom biggies like Netflix, the world’s largest online DVD rental service provider (traded on NASDAQ) and its breathing-down-the-neck rival Blockbuster (a NYSE stock) that recently acquired Movielink, lured by the latter’s formidable digital movie downloading service.

Interestingly, Seventymm has Netflix co-founder Eric Meyer in its advisory council among other luminaries in the field. That the business has lots of juice is evident from the fact that Seventymm has been bankrolled by several world-renowned venture capital firms to get it off to a resounding start last year.

How does Seventymm serve you? Well, what you need is an Internet connection to let you browse their site, select the movies you want to see from among a huge collection, pay online and have them delivered free at your doorstep. View the movies at your leisure and then have them re-collected when you order your next choices.

You need to be a subscriber at Seventymm for a minimum of 1 month. The other options are for 6 and 12 months.

If that sounds yummy to you the eternal film buffs, here is a piece of dampener. Seventymm is available in only 6 cities, namely Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Chandigarh. Bad luck, Kolkattans!
